Cochise County Board of Supervisors Certifies CD7 Election

Rural Arizona Acton identified potential concerns that members of the Cochise County Board of Supervisors might attempt to delay the certification of the Congressional District 7 (CD7) special election.

On Tuesday, October 7, Rural Arizona Action staff showed up to the Board of Supervisors meeting in Bisbee, AZ, to urge the supervisors to fulfill their legal responsibility and certify the CD7 special election results.

During public comment, Tara Clayton, Cochise County Organizer for Rural Arizona Action, reminded the board that election certification is not a matter of personal discretion or political opinion, but “an administrative duty required by law to uphold the integrity of our democratic process.”

Clayton also noted that “until the board certifies, residents of southern Cochise County [and] all of District 7 remain without full representation in Congress. Each day of delay denies our community the leadership and advocacy it deserves, especially on issues that directly affect our rural and border communities.”

Certifying elections is a mandatory democratic duty of election officials. Refusing to certify undermines the will of the voters of CD7.
